The curriculum involves 400 hours necessary to satisfy California State requirements.All courses are taught in English. The course of study includes extensive instruction and practical experience in manicures, pedicures, massage, customer service, personal appearance & hygiene, personal motivation & development, retail skills, client record keeping, business ethics, as well as sanitation, California state laws & regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing.

*Students are prepared to be an entry level nail technician.

This course is taught in English. Textbooks and Course Materials are taught in the English Language.

Nail Care Course Overview

Course Hours: 400 clock hours

The course is divided into pre-clinical instruction and clinical service learning experiences.

  1. Pre-clinical Classroom Instruction: The first 105 hours are devoted to classroom workshops, where students learn esthetic principles, technical information and professional practices.
  2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: The remaining 295 hours are spent in the clinic area where practical experience is gained.

Nail Care Course Outline

Each student’s time at Paul Mitchell The School - Pasadena nail care Program will be divided into three designations:

  1. CORE: Pre-Clinical classroom to learn the rules and prepare for the guest services.
  2. ADAPTIVE: Blend of classroom and clinic floor learning focused on reinforcing the core skills, while adapting to live clinic classroom experiences.
  3. CREATIVE: Final phase of nail technician classroom and clinic floor learning that prepares the future professional for licensing and salon and spa life. Students will enter a new phase of elective classroom workshops, coupled with challenging practical services that will continue to build them into confident nail technician.

Nail Care Course Subjects

The instructional program of Paul Mitchell The School - Pasadena meets or exceeds the state Requirements:

Technical and Practical Instruction in Health and Safety: includes hazardous substances, chemical safety, safety data sheets, protection from hazardous chemicals, preventing chemical injuries, health and safety laws and regulations, and preventing communicable diseases. 100
Technical Instruction and Practical Training in Disinfection and Sanitation: includes disinfection procedures to protect the health and safety of consumers as well as the technician and proper disinfection procedures for equipment used in establishments. 100
Technical Instruction and Practical Training in Manicure and Pedicure: includes water and oil manicures, hand and arm massage, complete pedicures, foot and ankle massage, nail analysis, nail repairs, and application of artificial nails, liquid, gel, powder brush-ons, dip, nail tips, and wraps. 150

The institution offers employment assistance to help graduates’ efforts to secure education-related employment that includes, but is not limited to training in professionalism, resume’ development, job interview preparation and job search skills.

No additional hours will be required to complete the additional training and these additional course are not a requirement for state licensure.

Exceeds means that during the course of your training you may complete more services then what is listed, however no additional hours, over the 400 required by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) will be required.

Nail Care TESTING AND GRADING PROCEDURES

The following tests and grading procedures are used to assess student learning and mastery of course content in the 400-hour course.

  1. Academic theory exams: Student must receive a grade of 80% or higher on each assigned theory exam.
  2. Core written and practical: Students must receive a grade of 80% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule. All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 80% in order to transition to the Clinic Classroom. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program and re-enroll in the next available Core class start date.
  3. Final written and practical: The written test covers an overview of all theory instruction, California state law, and other items covered on the state skin care exam.Students must receive a grade of 80% or higher on all final exams.
  4. Clinic Practical Skill Assessments: Future Professionals progress in practical skill assessments and theory hours will be digitally monitored on a weekly bases by the Future Professional Advisor using the CourseKey app. All assigned practical skill assessments must be completed in order to complete the program.

Nail Care Instructional Techniques and Methods

The 400 hour nail care programs are provided through a sequential set of learning steps which address specific tasks necessary for State Board preparation, graduation, and job entry level skills. Clinic equipment, implements and products are comparable to those used in the industry. Each student will receive instruction that relates to the performance of useful, creative and productive career-oriented activities. The course is presented through well-developed lesson plans that reflect the latest educational methods. Subjects are presented by means of lectures, demonstration, distance education, and student participation. Audio-visual aids, guest speakers, field trips, and other related learning methods are used in the course.
