The curriculum involves 600 hours to satisfy California state requirements.The course includes extensive instruction and practical experience in facials, hair removal, makeup application, customer service, personal appearance and hygiene, personal motivation and development, retail skills, client record keeping, business ethics, state laws and regulations, salon-type administration, and job interviewing.

*Graduates are prepared to be an entry level esthetician.

This course is taught in English. Textbooks and Course Materials are taught in the English Language.

Skin Care Course Overview

Course Hours: 600 clock hours

The course is divided into pre-clinical classroom instruction and clinical service learning experiences.

  1. Pre-clinical Classroom Instruction: The first 190-hours are devoted to classroom workshops where students learn design principles, technical information, and professional practices.
  2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: The remaining 410-hours are spent in the clinic area where practical experience is gained.
  3. Distance Education Learning Experience: Students enrolled in the program with distance education will complete 25% of their education through online learning.

Skin Care Course outline

Your time at Paul Mitchell The School - Pasadena for the 600 hour skin care program will be divided into four designations:

  1. Core Curriculum: This 190-hour time period is dedicated to exploring foundational knowledge and basic skin care, esthetics, facial, hair removal, and makeup procedures. You will receive individual attention in practical workshops, and you will complete monthly worksheets and periodic tests throughout the course. This is an intense and exciting portion of your experience.
  2. Clinic Classroom Learning Experience: You will enter a new phase of elective classroom workshops coupled with challenging practical services that will continue to build you into a confident skin care therapist.
  3. Classroom Learning Experience: During this phase of your learning, you will be introduced to guest speakers, prescriptive selling, motivation, self-improvement, body treatments, and emerging technologies. You will use your own technical and therapeutic abilities, coupled with the assistance of Learning Leaders, to provide service to guests. You will make discoveries and learn relationship-building skills that will ensure your success in this exciting, diverse field.
  4. Creative Curriculum: You will dress, act, and work like a true professional. You will use your own technical and therapeutic abilities, coupled with the assistance of Paul Mitchell The School - Pasadena Learning Leaders, to prepare for your future beauty industry career.

Skin Care Course Subjects

The instructional program of Paul Mitchell The School - Pasadena meets or exceeds the state Requirements.The following subjects are taught within the brick & mortar program and the hybrid programs.

Technical and Practical Instruction in Skin Care: Includes chemical and manual facials and massaging, stimulating, exfoliating, cleansing, or beautifying the face, scalp, neck, or body by the use of hands, esthetic devices, cosmetic products, antiseptics, lotions, tonics, or creams that do not result in the ablation or destruction of the live tissue. 350
Technical and Practical Instruction in Health and Safety: Includes hazardous substances, chemical safety, safety data sheets, protection from hazardous chemicals, preventing chemical injuries, health and safety laws and regulations, and preventing communicable diseases. 100
Technical Instruction and Practical Training in Disinfection and Sanitation: Includes disinfection procedures to protect the health and safety of consumers as well as the technician and proper disinfection procedures for equipment used in establishments. 100
Technical Instruction and Practical Training in Hair Removal and Lash and Brow Beautification: Includes tinting and perming eyelashes and brows and applying eyelashes to any person and includes removing superfluous hair from the body of any person by use of depilatories, tweezers, sugaring, nonprescription chemicals, or waxing, or by the use of devices and appliances of any kind or description, except by the use of lasers or light waves, which are commonly known as rays. 50

The institution offers employment assistance to help graduates’ efforts to secure education-related employment that includes, but is not limited to training in professionalism, resume’ development, job interview preparation and job search skills.

No additional hours will be required to complete the additional training and these additional course are not a requirement for state licensure.

Exceeds means that during the course of your training you may complete more services then what is listed, however no additional hours, over the 600 required by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC) will be required.

Distance Education hours and assignments are graded and recorded daily. Theory chapter exams, final exams and final practical evaluations must completed in the school facility.

Skin Care Program Testing and Grading Procedures

The following tests and grading procedures are used to assess student learning and mastery of course content in the 600-hour course.

  1. Academic theory exams: Student must receive a grade of 80% or higher on each assigned theory exam. Depending on the length of the distance education module, theory exams will occur weekly or bi-monthly. The theory exams will evaluate the student’s academic performance for each subject of the distance education curriculum.
  2. Core written and practical: Students must receive a grade of 80% or higher on each written exam and each practical skill exam in order to complete the Core program. The exams are an overview of instruction taught during the Core schedule. All Core written and practical skill exams must be passed with a 80% in order to transition to the Clinic Classroom. If students are unable to pass each exam after two attempts, the student may be asked to withdraw from the program and re-enroll in the next available Core class start date. The core written and practical skills evaluation must be completed within the school facility and cannot be taken through distance education.
  3. Final written and practical: The written test covers an overview of all theory instruction, California state law, and other items covered on the state skin care exam. Students must receive a grade of 80% or higher on all final exams. Final Exams must be completed within the school facility and cannot be taken through distance education.
  4. Clinic Practical Skill Assessments: Future Professionals progress in practical skill assessments and theory hours will be digitally monitored on a weekly bases by the Future Professional Advisor using the CourseKey app. All assigned practical skill assessments must be completed in order to complete the program.
  5. Distance Education Assessments: Students must complete a distance education written assessment and practical skill assessment. These are based on performance and must be completed on-campus each month. The distance education assessment will focus on the distance education subjects covered during that time period. Students must receive a grade of 80% or higher on each distance education written assessment and each practical assessment. Only students enrolled in the distance education program are required to complete these assessments.
  6. Distance Education Assignments: The institution will respond to student's submission of lessons, projects and or evaluations the next business day.

Skin Care Instructional Techniques and Methods

The 600 hour skin care programs are provided through a sequential set of learning steps which address specific tasks necessary for State Board preparation, graduation, and job entry level skills. Clinic equipment, implements and products are comparable to those used in the industry. Each student will receive instruction that relates to the performance of useful, creative and productive career-oriented activities. The course is presented through well-developed lesson plans that reflect the latest educational methods. Subjects are presented by means of lectures, demonstration, distance education, and student participation. Audio-visual aids, guest speakers, field trips, and other related learning methods are used in the course.
